Page content is loading, please wait. The Australian Government is making significant changes to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Your system must be fully installed, commissioned, and operational by April 30 to receive the maximum rebate.
WARNING: Installation Date Determines Your Rebate
The rebate is calculated based on when your system is fully installed and commissioned - NOT your quote date. Beware of installers who promise the higher rebate with just a quote. If they can't complete your installation before May 1st, you'll receive the lower rebate amount.
The Federal Government has announced proposed changes to the battery rebate program, subject to regulations being made:
Rebate amounts will decrease every 6 months (instead of yearly) starting May 1st, 2026
Larger batteries (over 14kWh) will receive significantly reduced rebate support
Systems installed and commissioned by April 30 receive the current (higher) rebate. Your installation completion date determines your rebate amount - not your quote date.
Systems installed and commissioned from May 1st onwards receive the reduced rebate. Amounts drop significantly for larger batteries, and continue to decline every 6 months.
Rebate continues to decline every January and July until the program ends in 2030.
From May 1st 2026, the rebate will be calculated differently based on your battery's usable capacity
of STC Factor

What this means for installations from May 1st onwards:
The first 14kWh of your battery gets the full rebate. The next 14kWh (14-28kWh total) only gets 60% of the rebate rate. Anything above 28kWh only gets 15% of the rebate rate. This significantly reduces the benefit of installing large batteries after April 30.
Compare rebate amounts before and after the May 1st changes
| Battery Size | Jan - April 2026 | May 2026 Onwards | Reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10kWh | $3,150 | $2,550 | -$600 |
| 25kWh | $7,875 | $5,250 | -$2,625 |
| 50kWh | $15,750 | $6,563 | -$9,187 |
* Based on typical STC trading price of $37.50 per certificate. Actual rebate values calculated using official government STC table.
For a 50kWh battery installed after May 1st, you lose over $9,100 in rebates!
That's 420 STCs (installed before May 1st) vs only 175 STCs (installed after May 1st) at $37.50 each
Important: Installation Date = Rebate Date
Your rebate is locked in on the date your system is fully installed, commissioned, and operational. Some installers may try to secure quotes by promising the higher rebate, then delay installation past May 1st - leaving you with the reduced rebate. Always confirm your guaranteed installation completion date in writing.
The Federal Battery Rebate launched in July 2025 triggered massive uptake in home batteries, with daily installations jumping from around 200 to over 1,500 per day. Additionally, the average battery size being installed has doubled.
This unprecedented demand has prompted the government to increase funding from $2.3 billion to $7.2 billion over four years, while making these adjustments to ensure the program's sustainability through to 2030.
Government's Goal: Keep the discount at around 30% across battery sizes while aligning with declining battery costs over time, and support over 2 million battery installations by 2030.
Get your battery fully installed, commissioned, and operational by April 30, 2026 to lock in the highest possible rebate.
We guarantee transparent timelines and will only commit to April installations if we can genuinely complete them before May 1st.
Be honest about timelines - we'll tell you upfront if we can complete your install before May 1st
